The boys banged with a 65-61 win over Noble to capture 1st place in the Noble tournament. Rockets were in a tight battle all game but were able to run away with the victory. The team is playing with the confidence desired from a basketball team.

Junior Luke Harstad was named the tournament MVP after averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds per game throughout the tournament. Sophomore Robert Kalsu was named to the All-Tournament First Team having a stretch of impressive performances. After the game he said, “Our future is bright. We have a lot of young talent and I think with this group of guys we are building something special”

“I feel like the varsity team is really starting their stride. With a few other things we need to improve on, like rebounding, We should be ready to go, and we are looking forward to the second half of the season.” said Coach Kevin Grieshop about how he feels the team is doing so far this season.

The Rockets have been surprising this season after losing 6 seniors last season. The challenge may be the Purcell tournament, taking on some tough teams in their division. The Rockets hold an 8-3 record this season and are on a hot streak. If they can keep this production up, they will have a shot at the state championship.

Newcomer Diante Palmer has averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game. He has had to step up this season after the loss of Devin Shelton. There is optimism around this program with 6 underclassmen on the varsity squad. If they progress like they have been, Rocket Basketball will be a must-watch team.

It was an amazing senior night for both the boys and the girls who came out with big victories against Tecumseh High School at Launchpad Gym. The girls game was an established victory early on, but the boys game was a nail biter to the very end.

Lady rockets won 45-25 with senior Hailey Talbot leading the way with 14 points. Coach Brandon Jackson thanked all the seniors: Sophia Darrow, D’asia Washington, Olivia Allison, Kay O’Hern, and Hailey Talbot for a great season. “Your heart and effort have been amazing to watch.” said Coach Jackson.

The Rocket boys basketball team took revenge on Tecumseh with a 65-55 win over the savages for senior night.

Although the game started very close, and for a short while Tecumseh was ahead, the boys were able to pull out a victory in the end. Seniors JP Krug and Conner Hooper both had a double-digit game, to help pull off the big win. Coach Jackson thanked Conner Hooper, JP Krug, Jaekob Scott, and Guy Fidelie for the heart, energy and passion demonstrated in their four years.

During halftime, and between games, the Swim Team, Robotics Program, Cheer Squad, and Basketball teams presented their seniors to the full house attending the game.

Right about now, seniors are noticing that this semester will be the last one of their high school careers. Many of them are becoming aware of what will be gone from their lives, and what they will miss the most.

Hunter Scurlock said, "I’m going to miss constantly being around my friends and the pride that each student has, in their own way, for the Mount.”

“I will miss the amazing people who have walked the halls,” said Sadie Harris, “making The Mount a great environment to be a part of.”

Logan Smith will miss the friends that he gets to see every day … “And the opportunities I have had here in the betterment of my character.”

Lauren Verdicchio exclaimed, “The teachers! Our teachers at the Mount are so kind, generous, and understanding of each and every student. For many years of my life, I was given no accommodations for my A.D.D. in school and it led to my academic demise. That's why I was thrilled when I learned about the PLUS program! Each teacher knows of my accommodations and helps me, in every way possible, to succeed in school. Because of the Mount, I am academically thriving every day. I will miss the teachers deeply.”

Devin Wedman echoed that sentiment adding that he will miss “Knowing that I have caring teachers.”

As a small nod to Mrs. DeNegri and our morning prayer, pledge, and announcements, Anthony Schudalla will miss that “Oh so cold, creamy, delicious milk.”

Emry Swinney was able to wrap all the sentiments into one when she said, “The people here that I get to call family."

It is almost time for the Golf season.  The first tournament for the team is on March 1 against Blanchard. Rocket Golf Team is ready for another successful season.

“We have four returning starters so there is high hope for reaching state again,” said Coach Brian Boeckman, “They are the defending Conference champions and went to state last year.” Three of this year's five varsity members are seniors who have been a part of a state reaching team every year.

The Girls golf team, Sophia Darrow and Drew Faires, does not have enough members for a team, but they will compete in multiple tournaments. Drew Faires made it to the state tournament last year and Coach Boeckman expects her to win some medals again this year. Even if they do not have any other teammates they do have quite a bit of experience.

Returning boys varsity team members are Joey Lewis, Dalton Faires, Alec Harkey, and Max Garza.

The team spends their practice time either at Topgolf or at JR’s Pub & Grill Golf Course. The Rocket Golf team works hard to improve their skills, but they are having fun as a team whether it be on the grass or at Topgolf getting some swings in.

Coach Boeckman expects the team to win Conference Championship and make it to State.

Homecoming week is one of the most enjoyable times for Mount St. Mary students and staff. There are two homecoming weeks a year at the Mount, one for football and one for basketball. Before the week starts, the school votes for the class attendants and a senior homecoming queen. When the week starts, the students dress up with certain themes hoping to beat the other classes in total dress-ups.

Homecoming is about celebrating the school and its history. “It’s just to celebrate the school,” said Counselor Mrs. Tecmire.

Toward the end of the week, there is a pep-rally which includes fun games that you can watch or participate for the whole school. Usually, the homecoming court has competitive games with the football or basketball team captains.

“Homecoming started in 1952 with the naming of our mascot, the Rockets. We have made very minor changes to the traditions," said Principal Mrs. DeNegri.

Mrs. DeNegri stated, “It’s to celebrate the Mount family, to honor tradition, and take pride in our student-athletes.”

Homecoming is indeed a great way to take pride in the student-athletes, and The Mount.

It’s almost time for Rocket Baseball season once again. The team is confident for this upcoming season. Rocket baseball has a great combination of talent and hard work. The future may hold victory for the team. “We’re going to take state,” assured junior Tucker Resolute.

The Rockets have a great deal to prove this season since moving up to class 4A. “This season will be a real test because we’re moving up to 4A, but we have a great group of kids and the best team spirit I’ve ever seen here,” said Coach Jeremy Carey. Even with the change up to 4A, the team is determined to be successful by working hard every day and improving as a team.

“I feel very confident about this upcoming season. Even though last year didn’t end up how we wanted it to, I feel that we as a team can grow, improve and learn from last season. We have leaders who push everyone to do their best on and off the field. Everyone on the team is busting their tail, whether it’s in the weight room, or on the field. Our confidence going into this season is very high, considering everyone wants to be out there, not because they are being forced to be out there,” said  Jadyn Ward when asked about this season.

The season kicks off on Monday, March 2 at Harrah and on Tuesday, March 3 is the home-opener also against Harrah. The team would love much rocket support as possible, so they can put on a show for their fans.

catholic schools rock!

Catholic Schools Week was celebrated from Jan 27th to Jan 31st. It is a week to celebrate education in a Catholic school and pride in our faith. It's a week when the focus is on the blessings and the benefits of attending a Catholic school.

Sophomore Rebekah Cleary said, “It reminds us to be grateful for our opportunity to go to a Catholic school, to have a greater education and to develop a family bond”.

Speaking freely is another reason to celebrate. Freshman Myles McNeill said, “We can talk about our faith freely and, coming from a public school, it's a big culture change, but you feel more open.”

Expressing their Catholic faith openly is a key factor for students. Senior Katherine Gallagher said, “It's important because we should be proud of and proud to show off. It's important to show people what catholic schools can do for the students that attend because of how free and generally happy you are.”

Being able to combine the Catholic faith with a good education is important. Many students who have known only private schools continue on to successful college studies and life long careers.

Mount St Mary’s Principal Mrs. DeNegri said, “Catholic Schools provide not only the opportunity, but the responsibility of offering a faith-filled environment for the Catholic faith to fulfill the nature and the guidance of children who will, of course, later become adults. We have the blessing to raise children in the purity of mercy, compassion, and love, which is embraced by the Holy Spirit, which is greatly needed.”
